A county town in West Sussex, 75 miles from London, Chichester is a charming cathedral city that is the ideal destination for those seeking a quiet village refuge with a modern edge. There is a rich heritage and a lovely cultural life that have made it a popular place to live.

Natural Attractions

Chichester is a stone’s throw from the natural beauty of the South Downs National Park, providing residents with 1,600km. sq. of hiking and biking trails, stunning vistas and an array of wildlife. In the other direction, there’s also West Sussex’s coastline and Chichester Harbour, which is a huge draw to the area and popular with sailing enthusiasts and families alike. Oaklands and Priory Park are popular spots in the summer months and are both within walking distance of the city centre. Ask any estate agent in the area; these natural features draw in people from across the country.

Shopping and Entertainment

The city centre is a great spot for shopping, with a mix of high street brands and independent stores, as well as markets throughout the year. The heart of Chichester has the highest concentration of stores, but more can be found in the smaller side lanes. This part of Sussex has a great selection of pubs and local breweries to explore as well, including restaurants and cafés catering to a wide spectrum of tastes.

Sport

Its close proximity to the sea makes Chichester a great location for sailing clubs, including Itchenors Sailing Club based in the Harbour. It’s also a golfer’s haven, with numerous courses and clubs within easy reach of this area. And horse racing fans will be familiar with the events held annually at Fontwell Racecourse, just five miles north of the city centre. For rowing or boat trips, as well as fishing, there’s also Chichester Canal which runs four miles from the Southgate Bason to Chichester Harbour.

Festivals and Events

Chichester is most famous for the much-loved Glorious Goodwood horse racing event which takes place here every year. But it’s also home to the Goodwood Festival of Speed – a family-friendly festival packed with fast cars, air shows and entertainment – and Goodwood Revival, which are enormously popular events.

Historic Landmarks

Chichester provides a great base for exploring nearby attractions in the neighbouring towns and villages, but it is also home to several landmarks of its own. The city is best known for its namesake cathedral which has welcomed visitors through its doors for over 900 years. It’s also known for John Edes House, the medieval Market Cross, the Guildhall in Priory Park, Pallant House and myriad historic architectural highlights including St Mary’s Hospital Almshouse.

Schools

For families looking to relocate, there are several highly-regarded schools in the area. Bishop Luffa School, St Phillip Howard Catholic School and Felpham Community College are all well-ranked, with the University of Chichester also based in the city centre.

Popular Areas

Summersdale is around a mile north of the city centre and boasts some lavish properties that are popular with affluent residents. Other top spots in the wider area include East and West Strand, West Wittering, Itchenor and Bosham. There has also been a number of new developments cropping up throughout the area over the last ten years, with several developers investing in modern properties in the city.
